How to Measure A Pond Liner

Finished digging the space for your new pond and ready to order the liner?  It can be confusing to know where to begin with measuring up.  If you try to predict it you could well end up having to buy a new one so that’s not advisable.

Fortunately there are some standard measurements you can take to make sure you get the right size liner and underlay for your new pond.  Don’t worry if you have a standard circular or oval shaped pond, or a U or L shape, it’s relatively straightforward.

Take care to get accurate measurements to ensure you get the best size.

Standard calculation for pond liners

  1. Measure the depth – Find the deepest point of pond and measure up to something flat like a board.
  2. Measure the widest width and longest length
  3. Calculate length + 2 times the depth + 30 cm overlap
  4. Calculate width + 2 times the depth + 30 cm overlap

Here’s an example: 3m x 2m pond + 1m depth + 30 = 6.3 metres.

Why twice the depth?

This accounts for going up and down two sides of the pond.

Why an extra 30 cm?

It is recommended that you allow an extra 15 cm either side of the pond to allow for an overlap, though this is just a standard example.  You can choose whatever figure you like based upon your edging method.

Calculating for a U or L shaped pond

You can calculate the amount of pond liner you need by breaking up complex ponds into sections.  For instance a U shaped pond could be divided into 3 sections and a L shaped pond could be divided into two sections using the standard calculation above.

You can also measure as a whole shape:

  1. Measure the depth – Find the deepest point of pond and measure up to something flat like a board.
  2. Measure length of two outer longest sides
  3. Calculate length + 3 times the depth + 30 cm
  4. Calculate width + 3 times the depth + 30 cm

Be careful to only take one depth measurement.

Measuring for pond underlay

Underlay is important to protect the liner from sharp objects, you can use the same measurements as your pond liner for this.

At Artisan Aquatics our EPDM liners come in a wide range of sizes up to 60m in width and can be cut to size.  Economical PVC liners and underlay are available as pre-packed sheets from 2m x 2m up to 8m x 10m.
