Swan Mussels (Anodonta cygnea)
Overview
Swan Mussels are natural pond filters, helping maintain clear, healthy water by filtering algae, suspended particles and organic waste. They are peaceful, hardy, and ideal for wildlife ponds, ornamental ponds and natural filtration systems.
These are large, mature mussels, fully conditioned and ready for introduction into established ponds.
Key Features
- Natural water filtration — each mussel filters up to 40–60 litres per day
- Helps reduce green water, suspended waste and algae
- Safe with fish, plants and wildlife
- Long‑lived, hardy freshwater species
- Excellent for ecological balance in wildlife ponds

2–3 mussels
Provides gentle natural filtration without overstocking. - Medium ponds (2,000–6,000 litres)
4–6 mussels
Ideal for noticeable clarity improvement and ecological balance. - Large ponds (6,000–15,000 litres+)
8–12 mussels
Supports strong natural filtration and sediment reduction. - Very large ponds / wildlife lakes
15+ mussels, depending on stocking and water movement.
Care Requirements
