This striking iris has a beautiful, double, deep purple flower. It prefers moist soil, making it perfect for damp areas. As with all iris, the tubers are harmful if eaten.

There’s something special about Iris ensata, also known as Japanese Irises. These beautiful flowers bloom between June and August, making them the perfect addition to any summer garden. But what sets them apart from other Irises?

For starters, Iris ensata has shorter standards and wider falls, giving them a butterfly-like appearance when in full bloom. They also thrive in moist soil, which makes them perfect for planting on the edge of a pond or in a moisture-rich border. Plus, they’re heavy feeders and benefit from plentiful watering in April and May to encourage flowering. Best of all, they typically reach heights of 100cm, making them a real showstopper in any garden!

Repotting or planting

9cm marginal plants require potting into a larger mesh basket. Place in a pond no deeper than 1/3 maximum recommended planting depth to allow the plants to establish. 1ltr marginal plants do not require repotting, place in the pond no deeper than 1/2 maximum recommended planting depth to allow the plants to establish. 3ltr and 5ltr plants do not require repotting, as they are larger more established plants they can be placed up to the maximum recommended depth. There is no need to remove the mesh basket.

Care instructions

Ensata prefer moist to boggy soil. After foliage has died back in Autumn cut back to just above the water surface. If trimming left until spring take care not to damage emerging shoots.
